Only a Basic Exploding Javelin has been seen so far, but every weapon in Horizon has multiple ammo types, so there are likely to be a variety of javelins for the Spike Thrower.Īmmo type does not constitute the entirety of weapon variety, though. This thrown weapon, designed by the Oseram tribe, will deal heavy damage by launching explosive javelins into enemies. One that has been prominently featured in promotional material thus far is the Spike Thrower.

More excitingly, though, Forbidden West will bring entirely new weapons to Aloy's arsenal. In a previous gameplay trailer, Aloy's weapon wheel revealed that the Blast Sling would be getting at least two new types of projectile: Cluster and Adhesive Grenades. While these weapons are expected to have all or most of their previous capabilities, they will also come with some new upgrades, such as ammo types. A new PlayStation Blog post specifically mentions that the Hunter Bow, Sharpshooter Bow, and Blast Sling will all make their return.

Many of Aloy's tools from Zero Dawn will make their return. Horizon Forbidden West's New Weapons & Armor Upgrades Guerrilla Games seems to hope that these new approaches to combat will be engagingly utilized through the game's more varied combat encounters, which will include more complicated fights against both humans and machines. There will be many returning abilities from Zero Dawn's RPG-like mechanics, but a greater emphasis on melee combat especially has had an impact on how the skill tree was reworked for Forbidden West. The entirety of Horizon Forbidden West's combat mechanics will be supported by a revamped skill tree as well. This will, of course, be a returning emphasis in Forbidden West, but there will supposedly be a greater number of equipment options, including new weapons and armor, with the ability to upgrade both. This translates most directly to Forbidden West's new traversal mechanics, but the philosophy of player agency is being applied to the game's combat as well.Īloy's main mode of combat in Zero Dawn was using ranged weaponry, most commonly bows.

It will have been five years since Guerrilla Games made its open world action-adventure debut, and while Zero Dawn managed a positive critical and fan reception, the developers are attempting to evolve the formula even further for Forbidden West by leaning into the player freedom that goes hand-in-hand with the open world structure. Early 2022 is packed with big releases, including Horizon Forbidden West, the follow-up to 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn.
